Career Prospects

Linguistics Graduates possess advanced skills in the following areas: Study and Knowledge of Systems: (thanks to their experience of studying and analysing linguistic systems), Problem Solving (thanks to their experience of formulating linguistic rules and principles based on linguistic data), Decision Making (thanks to their experience of continuous assessment of different linguistic theories), Analytical and Synthetic Thought (thanks to their experience of carefully analysing linguistic systems and drawing precise conclusions).

Given their specialist knowledge and broad range of skills, linguistics graduates will find a wide range of career positions open to them. The combination of skills and knowledge they have at their disposal, together with their philological background, allows them to find employment in careers associated directly with language and in other professions which, whilst not connected with language, demand well developed general skills:

Careers associated with language

  • First language teaching in primary and secondary education (combining their knowledge of Classics and Byzantine & Modern Greek Philology).
  • Teaching foreign languages (for those who are proficient in a foreign language and have a grounding in Philology and training in methodology).
  • Information technology for language technology purposes (e.g. automatic translation, word processing, spell checkers, multimedia, etc., in combination with IT knowledge).
  • Speech therapy (in combination with training in language disorders).
  • Publishing (creation of dictionaries, glossaries, teaching grammars, course books and foreign language teaching material, etc.).
  • Translation and Interpreting (in combination with training in translation techniques).

Career opportunities not related to language

  • Building and implementing organisational systems (in businesses and organisations).
  • Decision making and implementation centres (strategy building in companies and organisations).
  • Data analysis and processing (in public services, public or private companies and organisations).
