Department of Philology // University of Patras

Dissertation

The subject of the dissertation is finalised at the end of the third semester. The length of the dissertation is 20 000 to 25 000 words. This includes footnotes and the bibliography but does not include any appendices (e.g. data corpora, text corpora, illustrations, etc.).

Deadlines for submission and marking of dissertations.

Submission: 1st September

Marking: 30th September

If the dissertation is not submitted by the required date, it may be submitted at the end of the winter semester (i.e. in the February of the next calendar year). Under extenuating circumstances, submission may be postponed for up to one year at the discretion of the academic supervisor responsible and with the approval of the Co-ordinating Committee.

Supervising tutors will systematically monitor their postgraduate students throughout the time they are writing their dissertation and undertake responsibility for informing the Co-ordinating Committee of the Postgraduate Programme about the progress of the students under their supervision.

Two copies of the dissertation should be submitted. The work is marked by the member of the teaching staff who assigned the dissertation and supervised the student. The final mark is registered at the Departmental Office.

Failure to include a clear bibliography or list of other sources or evidence of any form of plagiarism during the writing of any assignment, including the dissertation, will result in the student failing the programme.

Postgraduate students who successfully satisfy all the requirements will be awarded a Postgraduate Degree in their chosen field. The final grade will be calculated on the basis of the dissertation (40%) and the average grade achieved in each of the three semesters (60%).

After the dissertation is approved and revisions made, postgraduate students are required to submit a hard copy of their work to the relevant library and another copy on CD using a read-only file format (pdf).
