Master's Degree Programme: General information
Attending Master's Degree Programme classes
Classes offered as part of the Master's Degree Programme involve seminars and/or lectures which are supplemented by seminars given by invited scholars from Greece and abroad.
Every two years the curriculum is drawn up by the Postgraduate Studies Co-ordinating Committee and approved by the General Assembly of the Department of Philology.
Attendance is compulsory and late arrival at or early departure from classes without adequate cause is not permitted. Postgraduate students who are absent without justification for more than two sessions shall be disqualified from the course and required to retake it. Should a student be absent with permission for more than one quarter of the sessions taught s/he will be disqualified from the course and required to retake it in the next academic session of the postgraduate programme. A maximum of two courses may be retaken. If by the end of the next academic session of the programme a student has not successfully completed the module or modules being retaken s/he will be disqualified from the Postgraduate Studies Programme.
Assessment of students on the Master's Degree Programme.
Postgraduate students' performance is assessed by written and oral examinations (presentations) and/or written assignments set by teaching staff. In addition to grades awarded for written assignments and examinations, the students' final grade also depends on his or her level of participation in classes and seminars.
Written assignments set will be between 5000 and 6000 words in length. The precise number of words will be decided for each module by the member of teaching staff responsible. The number of words includes footnotes but does not include the bibliography and any appendices that may be added (e.g. data and text corpora, illustrations, tables, etc.).
Deadlines for submission and marking of assignments.
Winter Semester:
Submission: By 31st January
Marking: By 15th February
Spring Semester:
Submission: By 15th June
Marking: By 30th June
Assignments which exceed the required number of words will not be accepted. Any student who fails to meet the deadline for submitting an assignment may submit it (or may be otherwise assessed) at the end of the next semester at the discretion of the member of the teaching staff responsible. However, the final grade for work submitted after the original deadline may not exceed 6/10 (except under extenuating circumstances). Changes to the deadlines may only be made in exceptional circumstances and only with the consent of the member of the teaching staff responsible and the approval of the Co-ordinating Committee. Should a student fail a module (provided work was submitted within the required deadline), s/he may resit the examination at the end of the following semester. Any student who fails the same module twice shall be required to retake the module (and attend classes) during the next academic session of the postgraduate programme. Any student failing more than two courses will be disqualified from the postgraduate studies programme. Grades are calculated as a mark out of ten, as is the case on undergraduate programmes (10 = excellent, pass mark = 6) and teaching staff register the grades with the Departmental Office.
Research Material
Any research material (in written or oral form) collected by students as part of their assessed work for the programme is the property of the relevant Section of the Department of Philology of the University of Patras.
Preparing a Doctorate Thesis
The time allowed to prepare a Doctorate thesis is a minimum of six teaching semesters. The maximum time permitted is ten teaching semesters. This period may be increased in length only by with the approval of the General Assembly, following an application to that effect by the student.
