Research Projects

Members of the Teaching and Research Staff in the Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies section have headed the following research programmes:

K. Karatheodoris Programme, Β 403 (December 2004- November 2007)

Study of traditional manuscripts and publication of Byzantine homiletic and hagiological texts recorded on manuscripts and papyrus which have so far not been published or have only been published in part.

Members: Doctorate candidates researching Byzantine Philology in the Department.
The aim of the programme is to publish critiques of selected hagiological  and homiletic texts; to gather material for the creation of a Key of Byzantine writers of hagiological and homiletic texts from the middle and late Byzantine period; and to create an ever-expanding database which will include a catalogue of homiletic and hagiological texts from the early Byzantine years which have not been published previously or have only been published in part.. These aims were announced by the Project Leader to the 6th Meeting of Byzantinologists of Greece and Cyprus (Athens, September 2005).

Second Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training (EPEAEK II), Information and Library Service "Telephaessa" Programme", "Kosmopolis" Collection (2002-2006). Modern Greek literary and philological journals produced from 1834-1931: 19 complete series of journals have been studied, digitalised and made available online.

The object of the programme was to research and supplement old or rare journals and make them available online. The digital "Kosmopolis Collection" was created in collaboration with the University of Patras Central Library and the Hellenic Library and Historical Archive (E.L.I.A.). The collection, which exists for the benefit of the whole academic community, is primarily used by fourth-year students of the Department, who access the collection's resources for the course "Landmarks in the periodical press". The working party set up to complete the Programme included graduates from the Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies Department.

The figure of Cassandra in Ancient and Modern Greek Literature.

The aim of this programme is to locate and study the figure of Cassandra in Ancient and Modern Greek Literature from the Iliad of Homer to modern Greek poetry and prose. The programme funded the doctoral research carried out by a graduate of our department, Ms. Dimitra Giotopoulou.
